Asheboro —  The Randolph Arts Guild (RAG) is hosting an exhibition of work by invited artists during the month of October that explores visual art making processes outside the mainstream.  The exhibition, entitled RADIOACTIVE, includes artists from North Carolina, Virginia, and the Netherlands.  It is curated by RAG program director Les Caison III and gallery committee member Ross Holt.  “This show is designed to feature artists who work with materials that may be unfamiliar to us in ways that are compelling, innovative, and highly creative,” says Caison.

For instance, Winston-Salem-based mixed media artist Woodsherry Anderson starts with household fabrics such as bedsheets, curtains, and knotted laces.  She employs a variety of processes including screen-printing and stitching.  These two techniques however are used in non-traditional fashions.  The printing is used as a layering effect and the stitches resemble marks made by drawing implements.  Other artists use media such as oil paint, wood block printing, ink pen illustration, photography, and metalsmithing.  It is the curious way they use the media that is to be considered: a bit abnormal, charged with energy and resonating in a “radioactive” manner.  “The subject matter of the work may or may not be provocative, but the processes employed by the artists will bring to Asheboro new ways of thinking about and creating visual art,” Holt says. “It’s going to sizzle!”

RADIOACTIVE is on display from October 7-28 at the Randolph Arts Guild, located at 123 Sunset Avenue in downtown Asheboro.  An opening reception is slated for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7. It’s free and the public is invited.  The guild will also host a free, informal Lunch and Learn with the artists from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 28.  The public is invited and welcome to bring a lunch.  The Randolph Arts Guild is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
